Annapolis Alive! News - January 21, 2008
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week Annapolis Alive! events bring us to discussion of our future, our maritime past, and a celebration of the 300 years since the Charter was granted.
The next enVISIONing Annapolis conversation will be held tomorrow night, Jan. 22, and the topic is one of great interest to everyone in the community who is looking to the future: Migrating Opportunity: Where are the Workers in a Gentrified Annapolis?
In “Hispanic In-Migration in the American City,” author Roberto Suro will explore the disappearing middle class in American cities and specifically how Annapolis success has meant skyrocketing real estate values, pricing middle-class and working-class families out of the market. Roberto Suro is the author of Strangers Among Us: How Latino Immigration is Transforming America. The conversation will be held at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts at 7 p.m. More information...
On Thursday, Jan. 24, the Annapolis Maritime Museum will connect us with our maritime heritage via a seminar on the Marine Railways of Anne Arundel County. During the 20th century, many local working boatyards had a marine railway, but only a few still exist. Historian Kevin Webb will discuss the history of these primitive but effective devices, and what factors have caused them to disappear from the Chesapeake watershed. The presentation, part of the Museum's 2008 Winter Maritime Seminar Series, begins at 7 p.m. at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. More information...
And to wrap up the week, we are all looking forward to the Annapolis Alive! Signature Event, Travel Through Three Amazing Centuries, that will ROCK Westfield Annapolis on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 7 - 10 p.m. This three-hour cocktail party will feature top name celebrities in the brand new section of Westfield Annapolis. Meet Baltimore Raven Matt Stover (7-8 p.m.), share sailing adventure stories with Annapolis Sailing hero Gary Jobson, enjoy a concert with nationally known Ram’s Head favorite Leon Redbone (reserved seating available for the 9 p.m. concert), and unwind with the local R&B group, Raw Hands.
For only $25.00 ADVANCE PURCHASE, your ticket price includes: musical entertainment and a concert, the once in a life-time opportunity to meet and greet sports celebrities and the best of Annapolis food samplings provided by McCormick and Schmick's, The Main Ingredient, Noodles & Company, and Phillips Seafood Restaurants. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase. The event will be accented by interactive displays which commemorate Annapolis’ success over the past 300 years. Among these displays will be the best of Annapolitan art, photography, maritime & culture. Guests will be able to participate in exclusive shopping through the centuries as they peruse old-fashioned kiosks, as well as some of Westfield’s newest stores.
In case the food, fun, entertainment and shopping aren’t enough; there will also be gift give-aways, door prize raffles and a fabulous silent auction! Tickets: $25. To learn more and purchase tickets online, click here
